Summer 2020 food trends to try

We know it might not seem like it, but there’s still plenty of summer 2020 left to enjoy. With the whole world living in some sort of lockdown at some point, there has been a rise in food trends being shared across social media, and we’ve found some of the best you might want to try!

Whipped coffee

If you’ve not seen this one all over your Instagram feed, you might have been living under a rock. Whipped coffee has taken the internet by storm, and with good reason. More specifically, The Korean coffee drink, Dalgona has been the go-to trend to follow.

Dalgona coffee is like a cappuccino turned on its head, with the frothy coffee on top and the milk underneath. It only requires three ingredients to make and you can have it hot or cold.

Harissa

Although harissa is nothing new, it’s become a big trend this summer due to its diversity. It’s a beautiful way to add depth and flavour to numerous vegetarian dishes, though can spice up meats and fish too.

It originates from North Africa and is made with both hot chilli peppers and sweet red peppers, along with garlic and other spices like cumin, coriander and caraway seeds. If you fancy giving it a go, we recommend this roasted harissa cauliflower with warm coriander hummus and dukkah from Olive Magazine. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

It’s a good dish to serve at a dinner party too. If you’re entertaining guests, don’t forget our wine coolers, which are great for serving food and nibbles alongside a glass of wine, juice or bottle of beer.

Plant-based food

Plant-based foods have been on the rise in response to the climate crisis, making it one of the food trends that isn’t just about taste.

The rise of vegetarianism and veganism has seen an increase in supermarkets expanding their plant-based food ranges. Major supermarket chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons are now all proud owners of their own brand plant-based ranges, and there’s been a surge in variety from the likes of Linda McCartney and Naked.

If you fancy getting green in the kitchen at home, Jamie Oliver has recently released his recipe book ‘Veg’ which has some great meal ideas. His veg tagine is well worth a go!

Veg-based BBQ’s are becoming all the more popular. Don’t forget your champagne cooler to keep your drinks nice and cool, and means you don’t need to step away from the BBQ when you need another drink!

Vegetables as carbs

Sticking with the veg theme, there’s been an increase in vegetables replacing carbohydrates - building on the ever-growing demand for low-carb diets. Cauliflower has been used as a replacement for rice for a couple of years now. But 2020 has seen its benefits expanding, as we’ve found it being used as a dough for pizza, and even being turned into gnocchi.

There’s also the likes of courgetti - courgette replacing spaghetti, celeriac couscous and eggplant lasagne to name but a few.

CBD oil

This trend is growing, and it’s growing fast. Cannabidiol or CBD comes from hemp and has multiple medicinal benefits - quelling anxiety and mediating pain. This has led to it becoming one of the most unusual ingredients to find its way into foods and drinks of all kinds. CBD is often consumed as an oil, making it easy to add to recipes, shakes or coffee.

There are tonnes of CBD oil recipes available online, but the CBD Armour website has a particularly good selection. In fact, these CBD Peppermint Chocolate Cups sound particularly good…

CBD cocktails are now also a thing. If you’re giving one a try, grab a couple of insulated tumblers, to keep them cooler for longer.
